What are online consultations?

There are many terms used meaning the same, eConsult or online consultations or communication, is a platform that allows NHS GP practices to provide online consultations and admin requests for their patients. Through this service, patients can submit their symptoms or requests electronically to their surgery.  This could be a medical or admin request.  THESE ARE FOR ROUTINE REQUESTS ONLY.

These are not for urgent or same day requests.

It also offers 24/7 access to NHS self-help information, directs patients to relevant services, and includes a symptom checker.

How to use: If you have more than one issue, please submit a separate form for each. This ensures you’ll be asked detailed questions for each concern, allowing the doctor to gather all the necessary information to respond effectively. If you’re unable to submit an eConsult, you’re welcome to call the practice or visit us in person.

We continue to follow BMA Safe Working Guidance and there is only a certain amount we can offer daily to continue to provide you with safe and good quality care.  Please do not abuse this system by sending multiple and repeated requests and consider which other services could help you.

What happens next? Once you submit your eConsult, it will be reviewed to determine which healthcare professional—such as a nurse, pharmacist, or doctor, or which admin team, is best suited to help you. This professional will then triage your case to ensure the most efficient and safe way to manage your issue.

GP practices receive numerous requests for assistance daily from patients and healthcare professionals in hospitals or community teams. The information you provide through eConsult helps us prioritize patients based on their needs, so it’s important to complete the form thoroughly and honestly.

Why so many questions? Most of the questions on the eConsult form are simple yes or no answers, so it shouldn’t take long to complete. The form is designed to safely gather important information. Some questions focus on ‘red flag’ symptoms that might suggest you need urgent care, such as going to the hospital, calling 999, or contacting the surgery or 111 directly. Other questions help us understand the nature and duration of your symptoms, allowing us to determine the best course of action. Every question is important, and while some may seem unnecessary, they could be crucial for your doctor’s assessment.
